Description

Certificate. Nauvoo House Association $50-$100 Stock Certificates (Uncut pair). Circa 1842. Size: 8 X 13 inches.

A complete uncut sheet of the Nauvoo House Association Stock Certificates dating from the early 1840s from the
second issue of the stock to build a Mormon hotel at Nauvoo, Illinois.

The
Nauvoo House was a boarding house that Joseph Smith began constructing in 1841. The hotel was not completed and, after the Prophet’s death, was converted into a residence for Emma and her second husband, Lewis Bidamon, known as the Riverside Mansion.

In January 1841, Smith received a revelation giving instructions to construct a house in Nauvoo which would be “a
resting-place for the weary traveler”. The revelation also instructed that the building should be called the Nauvoo House, and set out detailed instructions about how the building of the house would be financed. Bishop George Miller, Lyman Wight, John Snider, and Peter Haws were appointed as overseers of the project and they created the Nauvoo House Association on 23 February 1841.
